For California bonsai practitioners, the theft of the trees is just further proof of an increasingly unsettling California trend in which their tiny living art pieces have transformed into a beacon for crime.  

“This was not a bunch of kids joyriding who decided to steal a tree,” said Suzanne Miller, assistant director of the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt in Oakland. “This was a well-planned heist.”
