Dangerous waves are again slamming into the California coast this week after massive surf caused flooding and injuries less than a week ago.

Powerful Pacific storms sent massive surf towards California coast

Beachfront California residents on Friday cleaned up from flood damage unleashed by massive waves that pounded the coastline a day earlier and braced for another bout of extreme surf and heavy showers forecast into the weekend. The National Weather Service (NWS) posted high surf and coastal flood warnings for much of the California shoreline from San Diego north to the San Francisco Bay area, with breaking waves expected to reach 20, 25 and even 40 feet (12 m) in height in some areas.

As the holiday weekend starts, New York City ball drop watchers can expect potential showers while California's coast is continuing to experience extremely dangerous beach conditions with dangerously large waves, life-threatening rip currents and coastal flooding. New York City may have showers in the area as the ball drops in Times Square. Elsewhere, much of the country is looking dry, besides snow showers in West Virginia and western Pennsylvania and parts of western New York like Binghamton and Ithaca.
