We haven t really even begun yet so those numbers are likely to go up. one thing i want to point out. if you ask people what is the breakthrough infection rate in vaccinated people? what is it? we keep hearing it rare. it s hard to know because in the united states, testing has come way down since the end of last year. if you re vaccinated, you probably haven t gotten tested again, right unless you have symptoms of some sort so i don t think we know the breakthrough infection rate. i think the olympics will teach us and show us because you have people coming from all over the world and they are not all vaccinated because some countries don t have enough vaccines. we ll get a better idea how common these breakthrough infections really are. so then you think it s a good sign they re catching these cases, meaning that they re, you know, discovering them. does it show that these safety measures are working? yeah. i think if you look at the two biggest things, the testing and ....
Really aren t getting tested so it been a little bit of a black box in terms of how many of these people have breakthrough infections. the good news has been and remains they re really not getting that sick, certainly not sick enough they would require hospitalization but the breakthrough infection rate may be much higher than we previously realized. we re hearing within the states about some of those cases. what does this really tell us is that testing is going to be key. testing is going to be very important because some of these people even if vaccinated and not required that they re vaccinated in the olympic village but if they re vaccinated and have a breakthrough infection with this delta variant, they could be carrying a much higher viral load up to 1,000 times higher so they could potentially then spread it to unvaccinated populations. that s the concern. that s what they re trying to avoid. sanjay, what is stopping this from becoming a superspreader event? i hate to even thi ....

But i think that remains the important critical point. if you ve been vaccinated most people aren t getting tested anymore. might the breakthrough infection rate might be a little bit higher if we are routinely surveillance testing? perhaps. but if those people aren t getting symptoms or are getting sick, i think that s the point. a breakthrough means somebody who is vaccinated and yet still gets infected, which is different than getting sick and being hospitalized. we re talking about people being infected, but that doesn t necessarily mean that they re ill, which is what obviously the vaccine mostly is relied upon to keep us from getting sick. sanjay, los angeles s department of public health just issued a new voluntary mask guidance asking los angeles residents to wear a mask in public spaces even if they re fully vaccinated. does that make sense to you? and is it something that the whole country should be thinking ....
