Holyoke City Council delays vote on changes to marijuana ordinance; acting mayor offers updates Updated May 05, 2021; HOLYOKE The City Council held off on sweeping changes to an ordinance related to the cannabis industry. The council voted 7-6 in favor of changes to current rules for medical and recreational marijuana operations and special permitting. While the ordinance passed initially with a simple majority (7-6), Ward 5 Councilor Linda Vacon requested an opinion from the city’s Law Department if a supermajority or 9-4 vote were necessary. Vacon pointed out that council rules require a two-thirds vote on the legal form of an ordinance. Vacon and Ward 2 Councilor Terence Murphy said they did not receive a copy of the changes before Tuesday’s session. ....

A recently passed home rule petition granted the City Council one-time authority to appoint any councilor as acting mayor. City Clerk Brenna Murphy McGee will swear in Murphy at City Hall Tuesday morning. Murphy won on the first ballot 8-5. All 13 councilors voted for Murphy during a symbolic second vote. ....
Holyoke City Council approves raises for city workers; elected officials see boost Updated Apr 07, 2021; HOLYOKE The City Council on Tuesday approved a long-delayed salary and compensation ordinance for city workers, including raises for Holyoke Public Library workers paid less than minimum wage. Councilor at Large Rebecca Lisi, who chairs the Ordinance Committee, said the adopted compensation plan mainly affects City Hall workers. In past meetings, department heads told Lisi’s committee the difficulty in filling vacancies or delivering services due to low pay. Lisi noted that trash and recycling pickups were delayed by days and weeks due to staff shortages and equipment breakdowns at the Department of Public Works. ....

I think of the Holyokers from all different backgrounds and walks of life who got involved in the civic life of our community for the first time.” ....
