Tyler Franklin / WFPL With the clock ticking on this year’s legislative session, lawmakers discussed criminal justice issues like the bill limiting no-knock warrants and a measure making it a crime to insult police during a panel on KET Monday night. The discussion came two days after the anniversary of Breonna Taylor’s death, a Black woman killed by Louisville police during a middle-of-the-night raid on her apartment. Protesters have called for lawmakers to pass a bill banning no-knock warrants, but the Republican-led legislature appears poised to only pass a bill limiting them. Rep. Attica Scott is a Democrat from Louisville who proposed Breonna’s Law For Kentucky, a now-stalled proposal to totally ban no-knock warrants. ....
SHOW TRANSCRIPT Crazy that it s been a year, still unbelievable. The family of Breonna Taylor is still waiting for justice, nearly a year after her death. Every day is still March the 13th. The 26-year-old emergency room technician was shot and killed by Louisville police during a raid at her apartment as part of a drug-trafficking investigation involving a former boyfriend who was not there. None of the officers who fired shots were charged in her death - though one was charged with wanton endangerment for shots that entered a neighbor s apartment. Taylor s lawyer argues it s still possible for evidence to be presented to a grand jury for potential new charges. ....
Credit Liam Niemeyer / WKMS As many Kentuckians are planning to recognize the one-year mark of the death of Breonna Taylor at the hands of Louisville Metro Police Department officers, a group of Murray State University students are also working to honor her memory. The MSU College Democrats will host a candlelight vigil Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Elizabeth Hall Amphitheater on Murray State’s campus. The group’s president, Ryan Ackermann, told WKMS the members of the College Democrats felt called to keep the spotlight on Taylor one year after her killing. “We decided that it would be a very good thing to have a vigil for her in her memory, and honor her life,” Ackermann said. ....
