A WASTE company has been donating all unwanted items to a housing charity. G&S Clearance have been managing the property clearance and full-waste management recycling process from hotel chains, The Granville and Cecil Hotels, located in Brighton. To help those in need, the company has been donating goods from the 38-bedroom hotel, including towels and linens to Brighton Housing Trust, a local housing association and homeless charity. Adrian Westwood, chief executor and founder of G&S said he hopes to support those who are struggling. He said: It’s been a pleasure working with and supporting The Brighton Housing Trust, and it was by lucky coincidence that we came across them. ....
Mill View Hospital in Hove A PATIENT whose health made him a walking time bomb died alone on a mental health ward - and notes were missing from records in his final hours. At the time of his death, Joel Eneke, 32, had been placed in seclusion at Mill View Hospital in Hove and was supposed to be under constant watch. An inquest heard that every 15 minutes, staff were meant to make notes on Mr Eneke - who had treatment-resistant schizophrenia - but a whole hour s worth were not there. Mill View apologised to his family after a coroner highlighted points of learning including the need to maintain accurate records . ....
The reality of Brighton’s begging problem has come into sharp focus during the pandemic. With all rough sleepers having been offered accommodation, food and support for nearly a year now, supported by £6.4 million in Government funding, many residents have been surprised to see regular begging continuing as usual across the city. This has led Andy Winter of Brighton Housing Trust to speak frankly to The Argus, describing begging as the “elephant in room” that needs to be looked at by our city council. He said begging has very little to do with homelessness and rough sleeping but everything to do with addictions. ....
He said: “It was not until December that I had any concerns about Joel. “We were aware of the risks of him being vulnerable and I emailed Ms Goodwin with my concerns. “But Joel was also looking forward to Christmas. He did not seem to be on the verge of a psychotic relapse.” Ms Goodwin, who saw Joel regularly, said there had been no evidence of anyone staying with him in his flat and no evidence of “cuckooing” - where drug dealers use the home of vulnerable people for criminal activity. At 2.40am on December 21, another resident in the block of flats called police and reported their friend had “gone crazy”. Officers attended and found the window in the front door of the building smashed with blood on, and a lot of blood in Joel’s flat. ....
A HOMELESS campaigner has warned against a proposal to discourage people from giving spare change to people on the city’s streets. Jim Deans, from Sussex Homeless Support, spoke out over the idea to move to a cashless donation scheme in place of handing over money to people on Brighton and Hove’s streets. The scheme, suggested by Conservative councillor Dawn Barnett, would work similarly to projects in Ascot, Eton, Maidenhead and Windsor. In those schemes, the cashless donations raised fund individual support programmes for rough sleepers to help them make “real-life changes”. However, Mr Deans, who runs the homeless buses on the seafront, said people could turn to crime to feed their addictions if the money is taken away. ....
