HOLYOKE After seeing dozens of friends die of COVID-19 at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, Joe Langland Jr. thought he was in the clear until he got the bad news on his 74th birthday.
Langland is a longtime Amherst resident, retired postal worker and Vietnam veteran. He was one of about 35 Soldiers’ Home residents moved to Holyoke Medical Center last spring to keep them safe after the deadly coronavirus spread through the Soldiers’ Home. ....

Holyoke Soldiers’ Home to resume in-person visits

For the first time since September residents of the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home and its sister facility in Chelsea will be able to receive in-person visits from family and friends.
Brooke Karanovich, spokesperson for the state Executive Office of Health and Human Services, said Saturday that in-person visitation will begin February 10 after the final vaccination clinic at the two homes the day before. Both veterans’ facilities were prioritized under Phase One of Gov. Charlie Baker’s vaccination distribution plan.
“We look forward to safely connecting our veterans with their families and friends,” Karanovich said.  “We will continue to follow infection control guidelines and protocols to ensure the safety of our residents, staff and visitors.” ....

SJC upholds statute of limitations for state to recover medical costs

GLOUCESTER — The state s medical insurance program for low-income residents, MassHealth, paid for more than $100,000 of Jacqueline Kendall s medical bills before she died of leukemia in 2014. 
Years later, the agency wanted to recoup that cost after learning that Kendall had shared an ownership interest with another family member in a Gloucester home. 
But on Monday, the state s highest court concluded that MassHealth had missed a three-year statute of limitations for doing so, and thus could no longer seek reimbursement from her heirs. 
In its ruling Monday, the Supreme Judicial Court found that legislators had already given MassHealth more time than other creditors — and had also given the agency priority status in any distribution of assets.  ....
