Mackay Whitsunday to benefit from $56m highway tech upgrade

Motorists may soon notice new electronic signs along the Bruce Highway travelling between the Mackay and the Whitsundays.
It is part of a $56 million statewide Bruce Highway Road Operations Improvement Project to install Intelligent Transport Systems including at 81 locations across the Mackay Whitsundays district.
A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesman said the systems would minimise challenges from weather events and other unplanned incidents.

“CCTV, flood warning and Bluetooth detection systems will be used to monitor conditions and issues which will report back to road users through electronic signage,” the spokesman said. ....

Bruce Hwy stretch to get safety improvements

The Department of Transport and Main Roads has announced roadworks started on Thursday on a stretch of the Bruce Highway in the Gladstone region.
The safety improvement work will focus on the area between Charnwood Road and Fairbairn Flats, south of Miriam Vale.
The work will take place from Thursday to late-2022, Monday to Saturday between 6am and 6pm.
Lane closures, speed restrictions and traffic control will be in place during active hours. ....

Bruxner Highway undergoes major upgrade near Tabulam

Work is now under way to widen and resurface a section of the Bruxner Highway near Tabulam, as part of the $3.2 million project to upgrade the essential route for locals, tourists and freight operators.
New England MP Barnaby Joyce said the project will deliver safer, more reliable journeys for motorists.
“The Bruxner Highway links the Pacific Highway with the Northern Tablelands and this section of the road near Tabulam is used by almost 1000 vehicles daily, including about 100 heavy vehicles,” Mr Joyce said.
“This project will help to ensure those road users complete their journeys safely each day and will also sustain up to 75 jobs while it is being completed over the next four months, weather permitting.” ....

What will happen if state doesn't get 'second Bruce' funds?

The Queensland Government has locked in $200 million of funds for a new inland highway, which it says will be spent regardless of whether the Federal Government decides to chip in the additional $800 million.
The Inland Freight Route was announced as the âsecond Bruce Highwayâ by the Labor Party during the 2020 State Election campaign in October, and will include major upgrades to the Gregory, Dawson and Carnarvon Highways to allow larger road trains to travel the route.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads Mark Bailey said TMR will conduct planning across the entire route from Mungindi to Charters Towers to find the deficiencies in the existing road and determine projects that will be needed to address them. ....
