বছর শেষের আগেই শিশুদের টিকাকরণ শুরুর ইঙ্গিত দিলেন এমসের ডিরেক্টর রণদীপ গুলেরিয়া। আজ সংবাদমাধ্যমকে তিনি জানান, শিশুদের উপরে ৃ কোভ্যাক্সিন প্রতিষেধকের পরীক্ষামূলক প্রয়োগের চূড়ান্ত ফলাফল সেপ্টেম্বরে চলে আসবে। সূত্রের মতে, পুজোর আগেই শুরু হয়ে যেতে পারে শিশুদের টিকাকরণ প্রক্রিয়া। গুলেরিয়া বলেছেন, ‘‘আগামী কয়েক সপ্তাহে অথবা সেপ্টেম্বরের মধ্যেই শিশুদের জন্য প্রতিষেধক এসে যাওয়া উচিত।’’
কিন্তু প্রশ্ন হল, দেশে যখন বড়দের প্রতিষেধকই জুগিয়ে উঠতে পারছে না কোভ্যাক্সিন নির্মাতা ভারত বায়োটেক, তখন তারা নতুন করে ছোটদের প্রতিষেধক জোগানোর চাপ কি নিতে পারবে? বিশেষ করে এমন একটি সময়ে যখন কেন্দ্রীয় স্বাস্থ্যমন্ত্রী মনুসখ মাণ্ডবিয়া সংসদে স্বীকার করে নিয়েছেন যে, এ বছরের শেষের মধ্যে সব প্রাপ্তবয়স্ককে প্রতিষেধক দেওয়া যাবে কি না, তা নিশ্চিত করে বলা সম্ভব নয়। এ নিয়ে কংগ্রেস নেতা রাহুল গাঁধী টুইটারে লিখেছেন, ‘‘মানুষের জীবন সুতোয় ঝুলছে। আর সরকার মেনে নিচ্ছে যে, কোনও সময়সীমা নেই। শিরদাঁড়া না-থাকার আদর্শ উদাহরণ।’’
এই পরিস্থিতিতে বড়দের সঙ্গেই ছোটদের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় টিকার জোগান নিয়ে সংশয় তৈরি হয়েছে। যদিও স্বাস্থ্যকর্তাদের ব্যাখ্যা, ভারত বায়োটেক বা জ়াইডাস ক্যাডিলার মতো কিছু সংস্থা, যারা দু’ধরনের টিকাই বানাচ্ছে, তারা ইতিমধ্যেই ছোটদের ও প্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের জন্য কত টিকা বানানো হবে, সেই লক্ষ্যমাত্রা স্থির করে নিয়েছে। ফলে দু’টির মধ্যে সংঘাতের কোনও প্রশ্নই নেই। তা ছাড়া বয়স্কদের যেমন টিকার প্রয়োজন, তেমনই স্বাভাবিক জীবনে ফিরতে শিশুদেরও প্রতিষেধকের প্রয়োজন রয়েছে। সেই কারণে শিশুদের টিকাকরণেও জোর দিচ্ছে কেন্দ্র।

দ্রুত শিশুদের টিকাকরণ ও স্কুল খোলার পক্ষে সরব হয়েছেন এমস প্রধান গুলেরিয়া। তাঁর মতে, যে এলাকায় কোভিড আক্রান্তদের সংখ্যা কম, সেখানে ধাপে ধাপে স্কুল খোলাই যেতে পারে। গুলেরিয়া বলেন, ‘‘মনে রাখতে হবে, দেশের বড় সংখ্যক পড়ুয়ার কাছে কম্পিউটার-ইন্টারনেটের সুবিধা নেই। যত দ্রুত সম্ভব ফের ক্লাসঘরে ক্লাস করানো শুরু হোক। কারণ, এক জন ছাত্র বা ছাত্রীর চরিত্র নির্মাণে স্কুলের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ভূমিকা থাকে। তা কখনওই ভার্চুয়াল ক্লাসের মধ্যে অর্জন করা সম্ভব নয়।’’
তবে একই সঙ্গে স্কুলগুলিতে কড়া নজরদারির কথাও বলেছেন এমস প্রধান। গুলেরিয়ার প্রস্তাব, প্রথমে একটি বা দু’টি ক্লাস খোলা হোক। স্কুল খোলার পরেও যদি সংক্রমণের হার একই থাকে, তা হলে ধাপে ধাপে অন্য ক্লাসগুলি খোলার কথা ভাবা যেতে পারে। যদি সংক্রমণ বাড়ে, তা হলে স্কুল ফের বন্ধ করে দিতে হবে। শিশুদের টিকা বাজারে চলে এলে পরিস্থিতি পাল্টে যাবে বলেই আশা করছেন গুলেরিয়া।
বর্তমানে দেশে ছোটদের প্রতিষেধক তৈরির দৌড়ে রয়েছে ভারত বায়োটেক ও জ়াইডাস ক্যাডিলা। আগামী সপ্তাহে দুই থেকে পাঁচ বছরের শিশুদের উপরে টিকার দ্বিতীয় দফার পরীক্ষামূলক প্রয়োগ হবে এমসে। সূত্রের মতে, সব ঠিক থাকলে সেপ্টেম্বরের শেষ বা অক্টোবরের শুরুতে শিশু ও অপ্রাপ্তবয়স্কদের টিকাকরণ শুরুর ছাড়পত্র দিতে পারে নরেন্দ্র মোদী সরকার।
