Under the current law, independent schools can register as charities if they can demonstrate they make places available for those of more modest means usually through scholarships and bursaries. In return they get tax breaks on their annual profits. There is a logic to this u turn, which im going to set out. You can amend rules in a finance bill and they could do that in the first year of labour government, removing charitable status is a much more complex affair. Probably open to legal challenge.
