Happy Valley-Goose Bay-born screenwriter Byron Hamel has won a prestigious Academy Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting for his first drama, Shade of the Grapefruit Tree, which is based on his childhood, growing up with an abusive stepfather in California.
