Think of the Great British High Street, and Oxford Street in London’s West End likely springs to mind first. Europe’s busiest shopping street spans almost 2km in length, and with four Underground stations dotted up and down the street, it has typically attracted over 200 million visitors a year.
Its origins go back as far as the 12th Century, but the street became a retail haven in the 20th Century with the opening of the Selfridges department store in 1909. Other retailers would later base their ‘flagship’ stores on the road - including Marks & Spencer, Debenhams, and John Lewis & Partners - with vast floors of their stock laid out perfectly to best showcase the brand.
