Holly Water Cabin / Out of the Valley

© Rupert McKelvie
Approached via a path that winds through a corn field, Holly Water is clad in cedar sourced from a mill local to our Dartmoor workshop. Its exterior is characterised by a large mono pitched roof with generous eaves. The building is constructed around a Douglas fir frame, raised off the ground on pier foundations in order to minimise the need for concrete. It is highly insulated – with plant-based insulation – and with a high specification of membrane and envelope details for longevity and energy efficiency.

Shelters for Hotel Bjornson / Ark-shelter

We consider the concept of placing the modules between the trees ecological, not only for the tree preservation but also for the minimum contact of the modules with the ground due to raising them on stilts instead of laying on the classic concrete plate foundations. This allows the landscape to continuously flow under the building and breathe, while the green roof of the module doubles the biotope that lays beneath it.

The apartment design was based on the client’s idea of the outer shell, one-sided orientation, and views, that had to fit quite a large program. All buildings/cottages comprise two independent modules, each with its own independent apartment consisting of a bedroom-living room, children’s room, entry hall, and a bathroom. Each of these two separately functioning units can be connected into one by sliding the partitioning wall of the living rooms, creating a spacious central space where two families can meet and socialize.

Ziedlejas Wellness Resort / Open AD

In 2020, three corten steel and glass cabins opened for guests to stay the night with nature in lieu of a TV screen. The cabins with fully glazed fronts are inherently adaptable and deliberately minimalist to encourage being mindful of the natural surroundings. Inspired by the tiny living movement and Japanese culture, Open AD designed custom furniture such as the foldaway double bed and pop-up tea table. Extra sleeping space is available on the mezzanine level. Each cabin has its own bathroom tucked into the secluded section. Besides the cabins, the terraced herb garden is a source of ingredients for tea blends and sauna ritual accessories.

Tenir Eco Hotels / Levelstudio

© Miras Ibraimov
Text description provided by the architects. Tenir Eco Hotels is a modular glamping located 3200 meters (10’500 ft) above sea level, which makes it one of the highest altitude hotels in the world. The project was designed and delivered by Levelstudio in under 5 months, with the use of modular prefab construction techniques. Each 30 m² house is assembled from three 4.5x2.7x3.15 m sized modules, which were prefabricated by Sputnik Trailers at the company's factory in Almaty. The modules are made of a steel frame and aluminum sandwich panels with sustainable stone wool insulation, which makes them both rigid and well-insulated, responding to the earthquake-prone zone of the city and the harsh mountain climate. To deliver the modules to such a remote site, custom large sledges were manufactured, on which the modules were pulled from 12 to 45° degrees uphill by a bulldozer. Commissioned in July 2020, the project was finished and handed over by the start of the ski season in December of the same year.

Text description provided by the architects. These tiny buildings are created specifically for the environment that they are in. Every design decision has been made to either enhance the experience of the surroundings or shield from it. The purpose of the cabins is to let the people staying in them come close to nature but in a comfortable way.
© Jeanna Berger
All cabins are completely off the grid and located on a private island. Simplicity was a necessity – from a construction point of view but also to keep the balance between building and nature.
© Jeanna Berger
The timber structure is made from the same kind of trees that grows around it – Norway spruce. Pillars lift the floor up from the ground as a sign of respect for nature – thus the footprint of this building is minimal.
