The gloriously realised set of
Single Asian Female is visible before the show begins – rows of beautiful lanterns glowing behind a luminous neon sign for the Golden Phoenix Cafe, the biggest example of the rich red that permeates the set.
Then once the lights dim, the sign transforms into a karaoke machine, and we are introduced to our heroine Pearl belting out
I Will Survive in broken English, drawing the audience into her story with a boisterous, bitter monologue sang to the tune of Gloria Gaynor's hit.

ANN ARBOR – One of the most heartbreaking aspects of covering this pandemic has been hearing from local business owners how sales have plummeted in a college town that is usually bustling with shoppers.
David Lin closed two of his businesses in Ann Arbor in the spring of last year because of a sharp decline in sales. The owner of Bubble Island and the CEO of the Midwest coffee chain Espresso Royale, Lin said he saw business change overnight.

Lulu's Bakery & Cafe, known for its iconic 3-pound cinnamon rolls, is closing for good but will give its customers the opportunity to take a piece of the popular restaurant home with them.
Lulu's has been temporarily closed since the start of the pandemic, but posted on Facebook in November that it intended to reopen when it was safe. An online link announcing a liquidation, however, indicates that the popular establishment is no more.

Croatia to extend current epidemiological restrictions

ZAGREB, 15 April (Hina) – The head of the national COVID response team, Interior Minister Davor Božinović, said on Thursday that the epidemiological measures in force until midnight tonight would be extended, underscoring that the restrictions would not be tightened at the national level, but as necessary from county to county.
Speaking to the press after a meeting of the government’s Scientific Advisory Council, Božinović said that meeting mostly focused on the current situation with the spread of coronavirus.
County response teams, he added, will adopt stricter measures depending on the epidemiological situation which at the moment will not be ramped up at the national level.

Well, patio season 2021 was certainly very short-lived in Ontario, with outdoor dining now slated to shut down this coming Saturday after being permitted for only two weeks in regions like Toronto.
Just as bars, restaurants and cafes had to quickly scramble to set up their outdoor spaces, they will now have to quickly tear them down and cease all operations save for takeout and delivery for the next four weeks.

Anchorage's second Bear Paw restaurant will replace the previously boarded-up Hard Rock Cafe downtown

The downtown Hard Rock Cafe Anchorage, a boarded-up eyesore during the COVID-19 pandemic, is being replaced with the city’s second Bear Paw restaurant.
The new restaurant should open by early summer, featuring the Alaska-themed menu and decor also found at the Bear Paw Bar and Grill, which opened in Midtown when the pandemic began one year ago, said Bruce Burnett, owner of the Bear Paws.
“It’s going to be beautiful,” Burnett said. “It will be a showplace in this town.”
Burnett said the Hard Rock Cafe boarded up its windows last spring during the nationwide protests over the death of George Floyd, the 46-year-old Black man killed by police in Minneapolis in May.

Ms Julius said she had been searching for the right location for a while.
“I’ve worked in hospitality all my life and I’ve wanted to do this,” she said.
“I’d been looking to buy one that was already made and this opportunity came up with the brand new building.

Butte bars prepare for uncertain St. Patrick's Day celebration | Regional

BUTTE, Mont. – One of the biggest days and week for Butte is almost here and the M&M Bar and Café said they’ve stocked up big time for this uncertain holiday celebration.
"We’ve probably tripled our order... at least quadrupled our order but we’ve been fairly busy so we’ve been ordering quite a bit the last few weeks anyway which really says a lot about what’s going to happen on Wednesday,” Selina Pankovich, owner of the M&M said.
Last year Pankovich said they had the luxury of being able to return all of the beer they didn’t use because everything was shut down, this year that's not the case.

ICYMI: University of Guelph creates mental health program for farmers, Canada's first floral cafe and more

Some interesting Canadian food news stories to get caught up on
Posted March 14, 2021
In more recent years, mental health has been front of mind in the foodservice industry, but what about the agricultural sector?
With long hours under constant pressure–sometimes including financial and generational pressure–and the heavy workload, the reality is that a farmer's mental health takes the back seat. University of Guelph, along with the Ontario Veterinary College, are working on a program to improve the mental health of Ontario farmers.
With International Women's Day taking place earlier this week, the topic of equality in the restaurant industry is alive and well. It should come as no surprise that many local establishments and companies are run by women. However, being a women-led company as a primary reason why some are getting noticed rather than what they are offering is not enough.

Pandemic leaves Spotsylvania senior lonely, but not depressed

Up until March 7, 2020, Sarah Johnson was spending three days per week at the Stafford County Senior Café operated by Healthy Generations Agency on Aging.
On Wednesdays, she and a close-knit group of about 30 other senior citizens went shopping. On Mondays and Fridays, they played Bingo, or went bowling, or saw a movie, or did arts and crafts or listened to guest speakers or went on field trips—to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, to see “Annie” at Riverside Dinner Theater.
“[The café] was the best thing that happened to me since I got here—besides my daughter and son-in-law,” said Johnson, 75, who moved to the Fredericksburg area from Alabama in 2017.

COVID: Opening a new business during the pandemic
Germany has seen many local businesses go bust during the pandemic. But surprisingly, "risky business" has been a turn-on for some entrepreneurs and they say now is the time to take the plunge.
Downtown Bonn has seen numerous closures (right), while other stores (left) now keep irregular hours
It's not hard to see the effect the pandemic is having on German businesses these days. Once busy downtowns are now dotted with empty storefronts.
And while some locals are baffled to see these shops go, they're even more baffled by the fact that new shops are moving in. After all, who wants to open a new business in the middle of a pandemic?

Downtown Columbia cafes reflect on their business this past year

COLUMBIA - Thursday officially marked the one-year anniversary of the global pandemic, and the restaurant industry has been one of many to adjust their business.
Ernie's Cafe and Steakhouse, a local favorite in downtown Columbia, was not prepared to temporarily close its doors last March, but the owner knew what was coming.
"I totally disagree with those saying no one imagined it would last this long," Ernie's owner Tom Spurling said. "I didn't know then if we were coming back, I didn't know what the picture would look like, but I felt like we were headed for a year. A global reset."

At Mondoux at Dubai Creek Harbour, Lauro Janapon surveys the dining floor slowly filling up with customers. The gastronomic restaurant attracts a diverse range of patrons, an all-too-familiar sight for him.
And even on the busiest days, his own “diverse background” helps him and the rest of his team get through.
“I’ve worked with different nationalities… and we help each other by sharing our knowledge and experiences,” Janapon, the Filipino head waiter, says. “This helps solve problems faster and results in better decision-making.”
