Hundreds of Zimbabweans protested Wednesday about a shortage of COVID-19 vaccines as the country awaits more doses from China.
The government wants to inoculate at least 60% of Zimbabwe's more than 14 million people by the end of the year but has struggled to get the necessary supplies.
Claudina Maneni brought her 60-year-old mother to get her second vaccine dose Wednesday at Wilkins Hospital, Zimbabwe’s main COVID-19 vaccination center.
She was among people who arrived at 4 a.m. but waited in vain for hours.
The crowd demanded to see authorities and began to protest but dispersed upon hearing police were on their way.

Human rights groups in Zimbabwe say the government has frequently violated people’s basic rights since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The groups presented their findings at a partially virtual meeting with officials in the capital Thursday.
At the meeting, rights groups presented a report they call “The Impact of COVID-19 on Socio-Economic Rights.” The report chronicles how Zimbabwe’s government has violated human rights since COVID-19 lockdowns started in March 2020.
Calvin Fambirai, executive director of Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights, was one of the speakers. He said the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the gap in medical care between the haves and have-nots in the country.

'Don't open border with SA' Zim doctors fear impact of covid-19 variant – NewsDay Zimbabwe

- February 15, 2021
Zimbabwe Doctors for Human Rights (ZDHR) have advised the government not to open land borders with South Africa when it reviews the current lockdown.
The end of the extended lockdown coincides with South Africa’s resolution to open its borders on February 15.
A statement yesterday by South Africa’s Home Affairs department stated that the country will re-open its borders with neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Lesotho, the Kingdom of Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique, and the Beitbridge border post with Zimbabwe.
Despite recording an average of 83 new cases and around 11 deaths per day — a huge improvement from January — ZDHR fears the new variant found in SA could reverse the gains made if human traffic between the countries is allowed.
