Federal gun buyback program could cost as much as $756 million: PBO report

OTTAWA Costs for the Liberal government’s gun buyback program could soar well beyond initial estimates, prompting fresh doubts about whether Ottawa can remain under budget on its plan to decommission potentially hundreds of thousands of newly prohibited firearms.
According to a new report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer, Ottawa could spend as much as $756 million to buy back the firearms that it prohibited last year, a 70 per cent increase compared with the government’s own estimates.
