Kerry Saxby-Junna returned to her old home of Ballina on Friday for the unveiling of a new tribute and tourist attraction in her honour. An enthusiastic crowd of friends, family and supporters were there for the unveiling by Mayor David Wright of the new interpretive signage display, beside the Richmond River, near the Ballina War Memorial Pool. The new aluminium display is over two metres high and details Ms Saxby-Junna’s extraordinary athletic achievements, which include 32 world records, three Olympics and 27 national titles. ....
Premium Content Subscriber only Interpretive signage honouring former world champion race walker Kerry Saxby-Junna was unveiled in Ballina on Friday. The signage, located near the Ballina War Memorial Pool, forms part of the Kerry Saxby Walkway. The walkway starts at the River Street entry to Captain Cook Park (adjacent to Ballina RSL) and continues to the end of North Wall. The walkway is approximately 4.5km long, just shy of the 5km Kerry excelled at. Ms Saxby-Junna held the 5km race walking world record for almost two decades, setting a staggering speed of 20 minutes and three seconds in 1996. The new signage is over two metres high and features striking aluminium panels listing Kerry s key achievements and a podium made from sandstone. ....

A detailed scale model of a raft built to commemorate the historic Las Balsas expedition is looking for a new place to unfurl its sail. Formerly on display at the Ballina Airport, the raft model is currently in storage and out of the public eye. Col Lee from the Rotary Club of Ballina on Richmond is one of the people who would like to change that. The model was made for Rotary by Brian Walsh from Alstonville, a former boat-builder, to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the Las Balsas expedition arriving in Ballina after an epic trans-Pacific voyage. ....
