Brooke Arneson, FFA Chapter Reporter Twenty-four Sleepy Eye FFA members traveled to Sibley State Park, near New London, from June 15 to 18, for the Timberland Leadership Camp. Sleepy Eye FFA Advisors, Mary Hoffmann, McKenzie Cselovszki, and Katie Emmett, the Sleepy Eye Summer Intern, Taylor Peck, along with several members from the Tracy and Marshall FFA chapters also attended the camp. The Sleepy Eye Advisors, along with Region and State Officers, and the Summer Intern did all of the programming, activities, and food for the camp for the week. While at the leadership camp, FFA members got to experience many things including: get to know each other activities, a hike to Mount Tom, survival in the forest, escape room, archery, and sessions about goals and the various opportunities in FFA. ....
MAY – To commemorate National FFA Week, and hopefully recruit new members in the coming years, the May FFA hosted its “A Walk in the Life of an FFA Member” event Friday for Pre-K students and up. “This week is National FFA Week and I decided to make the hard decision to pull back and not do livestock judging and cotton judging this year because of the virus and several other factors like quarantines, softball and baseball,” said May ag teacher Codi Perkins. “It’s just been challenging year for everybody and with that being said we didn’t have too much going on this week so I thought what better way to celebrate National FFA Week than to try to get some of our youngsters involved and curious about the program. We’re doing a little tour and explaining to some of the younger kiddos what FFA is and they’re going to get to see all the things they get to do if they join FFA.” ....
The District 1 FFA Chapters recently competed in four Career Development Events (CDEs) that were conducted by the Ohio FFA. In the Nature Interpretation CDE students identified song birds, wild flowers, amphibians and reptiles. They took a test that included use of tools and equipment used by naturalists. Delta placed first, Evergreen second, Fairview third and Oregon-Clay fourth. Individual winners were: first â Kendal Vasquez, Delta; second â Jazmin Todd, Evergreen; third Brooke Phillips â Fairview; and fourth â Kylee Herrick, Oregon Clay. In the Agricultural Technology and Mechanical Systems CDE the students were tested on: arc/wire welding, cutting, power and hand tools, and a micrometer and depth gauge. They identified lubricants and coolants, personal safety equipment, diesel fuel system parts, hydraulic system parts and hand tools.
