Gainesville police say man scammed elderly victims, had them mail cash

According to a Gainesville police arrest report, the three victims were all instructed to send their packages full of money to a Gainesville hotel, addressed to a man named “John William” or “John Wilian.”
The man staying in room 113 at the Extended Stay America at 3600 SW 42nd St. in Gainesville registered as John Wilian, was set to check out at 11:30 a.m. on April 22, but was delayed as he awaited delivery of a package, the front clerk told police, according to an arrest report.
Confronted by an undercover officer in the hotel’s lobby who had watched him leave his room and head for the front desk, the man offered a false name, the arrest report said. During his arrest, Thomas was found to have a valid Florida license and a North Redington Beach address, the arrest report said. ....

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Wednesday April 21, 2021, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to an elderly citizen in western Iredell County possibly being the victim of a scam.
Patrol deputies responded to the victim’s home and met with the victim. The deputies learned the victim had been told by a caller, who claimed to be a law enforcement officer, had told the victim there were arrest warrants outstanding for them. The suspectthen told the victim, he was trying to help clear up the confusion and take care of the warrants. The suspect then convinced the victim to send 20,000.00 dollars in cash by FedEx, overnight to an address in Gainesvil ....

51-year-old Carlton Ross Thomas of Tampa, Florida was arrested by Iredell County Sheriff’s Officers on April 21 on felony counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and exploitation of an elder adult.
Events leading to Thomas’ arrest began when the Sheriff’s Office took a call regarding an elderly citizen in western Iredell County who was the victim of a possible scam. Deputies met with the victim at her home. A caller, who claimed to be a law enforcement officer, told the victim there were outstanding warrants for her arrest.
