A video depicting a swarm of clam worms in a South Carolina harbor picked up thousands of views since being shared on Facebook earlier this month.
But officials say this is no cause for alarm, but rather an annual event that signifies the start of spring for some in Charleston, South Carolina and other coastal cities.
On paper, these clam worms may seem terrifying: carnivorous animals with hook-shaped jaws that can bite and pierce human skin. 
But in reality, they re very small less than 1 inch long and would only bite someone as a way to defend themselves, said Erin Weeks with the marine resources division of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. ....

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WMBF) – Marine worms with hooked jaws are starting to be seen in South Carolina’s coastal waters.
According to information from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, these animals are sometimes called clamworms and ordinarily live on the seafloor. During new and full moons in the spring, they undergo a transformation where their bodies morph into reproductive forms called “epitokes” as they swarm in coastal waters, state wildlife officials said. ....
