Karnataka government will make a decision on the legality of carpooling apps within 10 days. A minister denied reports that carpoolers would be fined for operating without a licence, but said the apps themselves needed to register with the government. Reddy also said private vehicles could not be used for carpooling, only commercial vehicles with yellow number plates.
Bengaluru has an estimated two million people employed in the technology, startup and BPO sectors for thousands of whom carpooling is a preferred option to get around in the traffic-laden city.
There are several reasons why states should prioritise carpooling. One, it can make mobility affordable for many, especially when public transport options are inadequate in many cities. Two, carpooling can reduce air pollution levels. Bengaluru, for example, has a population of 11 million people and 12.5 million vehicles. At least 40% of PM2.5 comes from vehicular traffic.
