Bill To Allow Gun Carrying Without Permit Advances In South Carolina House

Apr 8, 2021 (Columbia, SC) -- State lawmakers are moving forward with a bill that would remove the need for a concealed weapon permit to carry a gun.  The SC Constitutional Carry Act of 2021 passed on a 69 to 47 vote in the House. There is one more procedural vote needed before the proposed legislation heads to the Senate.  If it becomes law, state residents could carry a gun openly without a permit.

Tuesday afternoon, members of the House Judiciary Committee began debate on the “Constitutional Carry Act.” Where the previous bill allowed open carry in public spaces with a permit, this measure allows for open carry regardless of a person’s level of training. Both law enforcement and faith groups have spoken out in opposition to open carry laws.
