Almost six years in the making, the community remembrance marker sits just off Fruitville Road behind the Universalist Unitarian Church of Sarasota.
Prior to 1921, Sarasota was a part of Manatee County. During that time, there were six known victims of lynchings in this area. A historical marker will be placed in Sarasota to memorialize the victims.
The last 10 years have seen the creation of a number of giving circles—organizations that require an annual minimum donation and work together on a membership basis.
Eleanor Merritt: Remembrance is the first exhibit featuring the work of a Black female artist at Ringling Museum. The exhibit is open through Aug. 21.
