Washington City Council Approaches Next Steps for Pickleball Court

Next steps on a pickleball and tennis court resurfacing project were recently discussed by the Washington City Council. The city recently received a $5,000 grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation for the project, which the council had a couple votes on whether to approve submitting a grant application. City Administrator Brent Hinson mentioned the grant during his department report, and he asked if an action item on the project could be put on the June 1st meeting agenda. Washington School Board Approves Lincoln HVAC Bids, Parade Application

The Washington Community School Board approved bids for the Lincoln Elementary heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvement project during a special meeting Tuesday. After receiving 18 bid proposals the board approved contracts for five bid packages and two alternates for a total of $2,759,509. The board also approved two alternate rooftop unit purchases for Lincoln at a total cost of $57,795. Washington Girls Track Hosts Meet

Another track competition will take place at Case Field tonight when Washington welcomes six other teams for a girls only meet.  The Demons will face off with Benton Community, Clear Creek-Amana, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, and Tipton. Washington will look to keep the momentum from a third place finish at the Rocket Relays last week. They tallied three event champions including Molly Klinzman in the 200m dash, Ally Rees in the shot put, and the 4x800m relay of Iris Peterson, Abby Kleese, Cloe Telleen, and Grace Voss.  The meet gets underway at 4:30 p.m. this evening in Washington....

Washington Boys Finish Third at Demon Relays

Plenty of track teams across Southeast Iowa congregated to Case Field last night for the annual Demon Relays and Washington showed out in front of the home crowd. The Demon boys placed third out of 10 teams with 128 points while Iowa City Liberty took home the team title with 147. Seven events belonged to the Demons with three relays taking the top spot and four different individuals enjoying gold. Washington City Council Goes Back and Forth on Pickleball Proposal

The Washington City Council held a lengthy discussion on a grant proposal at their most recent meeting, which resulted in a unanimous vote of approval. A group led by Keith Lazar submitted a request for the city’s endorsement to apply for a $5,000 spring small grant from the Washington County Riverboat Foundation to renovate the existing tennis courts near Case Field into dual purpose courts for pickleball.
