GAMEDAY CENTRAL: Softball Ends Home Stand Against Winthrop

GAME SETUP 🆚 Opponent: Winthrop 🗓 Date/Time: Tuesday, March 15 • 6 p.m. 📍 Venue: McWhorter Stadium • Clemson, S.C. 📺 Watch: ACCNX 📊 Stats: Live Stats Clemson: Roster | SchedulePREVIEW Clemson takes a 17-6 record into the midweek game against Winthrop. The Tigers are facing Winthrop on Tuesday after the originally-scheduled game for Wednesday was moved due to anticipated inclement weather. The Tigers have outscored opponents 99-45 in games this season, including run-ruling five opponents. Clemson has 163 hits through 23 games, including posting 31 doubles and 17 home runs. The Tigers are entering the midweek game after sweeping action Saturday-Monday in the Tiger Invitational against Liberty and Illinois. The pitching staff is posting a 1.44 ERA with 146 strikeouts through 156 innings.FIRST 100 Clemson softball played its 100th game in program history on March 13 in the 12:30 p.m. matchup against Illinois at the Tiger Invitational. The 100th game will be played almost five years to the date of the program being announced - the program addition was on March 14, 2017. Through the first 100 games, the softball team paced itself to tie the best start by any program at Clemson. Women's tennis is the other sport that ties softball clocking 78 wins in its first 100 matches played. Among current Clemson head coaches, John Rittman solidified himself as the winningest head coach through the first 100 games clocking 78 since the program's first year in 2020. Rittman surpassed baseball's Monte Lee and football's Dabo Swinney, who each held a 74-26 record through their first 100 games.YOUNG PROGRAM The Clemson softball program has accomplished multiple feats for being a program just over 100 games. Entering this season, the only players with over 100 collegiate games under their belts are transfers that began their careers at other programs. These players include Marissa Guimbarda, Grace Mattimore, Cammy Pereira, Sam Russ and Bailey Taylor. Valerie Cagle surpassed the 100-game mark after starting every game in program history for the Tigers. The remaining 23 players on the 2022 roster have appeared in less than 100 games led by JoJo Hyatt clocking 95 and Arielle Oda appearing in 90. Those 23 players that have less than 100 games are listed as either freshman, sophomores or redshirt sophomores due to the shortened inaugural season. The Tigers won the ACC Regular Season Title in their first complete season in the 2021 after playing only 27 games in 2020. In only their second season, the Tigers also competed in the ACC Championship game and at the Tuscaloosa Regional.WELCOMING HOME ALUMNI The softball program welcomed back Casey Bigham (2021) to McWhorter Stadium prior to the 100th game last Sunday. Casey was recognized for her time in the Orange and Regalia last season and was presented with her 2021 ACC Championship Ring. Prior to tonight's Winthrop game, Clemson will recognize Ansley Gilstrap (2021) for her time with the program and present her with her ACC Championship Ring as well. Ansley is currently an assistant coach with Winthrop's program.SENIOR CLASS AWARD Graduates Marissa Guimbarda and Cammy Pereira have been selected as two of the 30 candidates for the 2022 Softball Senior CLASS Award.  An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. Clemson is one of two programs in the country to have multiple athletes selected as candidates, the other being Washington. The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists later this season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot for nationwide voting. For complete coverage of the Clemson Softball team, follow @ClemsonSoftball on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. Johnson Sparks Tigers to Win Over Troy

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Morgan Johnson’s pinch-hit double to lead off the seventh inning sparked Clemson (44-7) to a 4-2 victory against Troy in an elimination game at the Tuscaloosa Regional on Saturday evening. Johnson would later come around to score the go-ahead run on Mackenzie Clark’s single.
Clemson advances to play third-seeded Alabama at 2 p.m. eastern on Sunday in an elimination game for the Tigers on ESPN3 and WCCP 105.5 FM. If Clemson were to win, the Tigers and Tide would meet again Sunday at 4:30 p.m. to determine the Regional winner in the double-elimination format.
Johnson, a freshman from Georgia, entered as a pinch hitter to open the 7th and drove the second pitch she saw into left center for a double, her seventh extra-base-hit of the year. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Johnson scored the go-ahead run when Clark hit a well-placed ball to shortstop that didn’t draw a throw.

Syracuse’s leadoff hitters, Calista Almer and Angel Jasso, both struck out in the first inning against Clemson pitcher Valerie Cagle’s opening eight pitches.
Neli Casares-Maher came up to bat, taking a ball on the first pitch. She sized up the second pitch and leveled her sixth home run of the season into the right-center field netting, giving Syracuse a 1-0 lead just 10 pitches into the game.
Then in the third inning, Paris Woods led off and crushed a first-pitch home run 215 feet into the center field netting, tying the game at 2-2.

With runners on second and third base, Clemson’s Ansley Gilstrap worked a 3-1 count against Alexa Romero. On the fifth pitch of the at-bat, Romero’s pitch was outside the strike zone, putting Gilstrap on first and loading the bases. Not even four innings into the contest, Romero walked her fifth batter of the game — her second of the inning. Syracuse trailed 3-2, putting the graduate student in a tough spot.
Romero was able to strikeout the Tigers’ top hitter, Valerie Cagle, swinging to end the inning. But the damage had already been done. Johnson’s full count walk had cost Romero and the Orange (19-21, 11-18 Atlantic Coast) as she later scored on an RBI single into right field by junior Cammy Pereira. SU’s offense, which has struggled all season long, had mustered two solo home runs in the first three innings, but Romero’s control issues on Friday ultimately cost Syracuse the first game of the four-game weekend series against No. 13 Clemson (34-8, 27-4), 4-2.

Bigham Registers Walk-Off Hit in Thriller Over NC State

Photos by Kaitlyn Cote, Clemson Athletics
CLEMSON, S.C. — On senior day at McWhorter Stadium, Clemson senior infielder Casey Bigham registered a walk-off hit to score senior infielder Ansley Gilstrap with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh against NC State on Saturday. The Tigers won the game, 4-3, and clinched the series with its third win over the Wolfpack this weekend. With the win, the Tigers improved to 36-4 overall and 25-4 in ACC contests, and extended their win streak to 16 games.
With Clemson trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, NC State opted to intentionally walk Valerie Cagle with the bases loaded, allowing Alia Logoleo to score. Then, the Wolfpack made a pitching change with Marissa Guimbarda at the plate with a 2-0 count. Guimbarda eventually had a full count and walked, which tied the game, 3-3. Then, Bigham smashed her game-winning hit, which smacked off of the left-center field wall, in route to completing the Tigers’ seventh-inning comeback.

Bigham was instrumental in Clemson’s victory over the Hokies, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of RBIs and one stolen base.
