People who are incarcerated have their parental rights terminated at a disproportionately high rate in Connecticut. The rate is much higher among Black and Latino parents, which leads to more children of color placed in adoption.
Those are the findings of a report released Friday by the nonprofit Connecticut Voices for Children and law students at Yale’s criminal justice clinic.
Yale Professor Miriam Gohara led the study. She said the main problem is the state may consider a parent in neglect of their child because of a prison sentence longer than 15 months. That leads to termination of parental rights, or TPR. ....

Members of the police union in Bridgeport, Connecticut, have voted “no confidence” in the city’s first Latina chief 54% of union members in attendance Wednesday voted against Acting Chief Rebeca Garcia.

Union President and Police Sgt. Brad Seely said the city needs to take concerns about the acting chief and low morale seriously. He said he did not give city officials information about turnout. Seely said a “significant” number of union members voted, but did not confirm numbers for WSHU. ....

Connecticut Advocates Pushing To Restore Voting Rights For People On Parole

1:10
Connecticut restored voting rights for people on probation almost two decades ago. Now, advocates want state lawmakers to give that right to people on parole, too. But they say many people touched by the justice system still do not know they have a right to vote.
James Jeter directs Unlock The Vote. He was incarcerated for over 19 years before helping restore voting rights for the reentry community. He said communities he works with often don’t make a habit of voting.
“The larger issue is, is that, when you’re poor, it doesn’t matter who is in power. You’re pretty much remaining poor. That has been the reality and the narrative of so many people. Their oppression has been bipartisan. No matter who’s in power, it’s been consistent,” Jeter said. ....
