شهدت بلاد الشام والعراق أحداث كثيرة على مر العصور، وكانت مهداً لكثير من الحضارات، بسبب موقعها الاستراتيجي وخيراتها الوفيرة، وهذا جعلها محط أنظار الطامعين، لذلك تم بناء الكثير من القلاع والحصون، بهدف الحماية، كما كانت القلاع مستودع للأسلحة وبيت المال ومركز الحكومة المحلية.
