this is the "cbs evening news" >> pelley: good evening. today the president called what's happening in syria "the slaughter of innocents," and we got a heartbreaking picture in the news room that showed us just what he meant. near the town of hama, two families, 18 people, many children, were shot to death. the rebels said the syrian army did this. we can't verify that because reporters are banned from the country. two reporters who got in were killed earlier this week. as you know, a freedom movement rose up a year ago against the assad dictatorship and after russia and china vetoed a u.n. resolution this month that called on bashar al-assad to step down, he apparently decided that this was his chance to crush the rebels. president obama said this today. >> it is absolutely imperative for the international community to rally and send a clear message to president assad that it is time for a transition, it's time for that regime to move on and it is time to stop

holed up in homs. today they issued a plea to the world to help them get out safely. >> just any help possible. >> reporter: syrian forces are not allowing ambulances in or out of the city. the only way to evacuate those in need of medical care is to smuggle them out on motorcycles, on donkeys, or on the backs of volunteers who risk their lives to ferry them across the border to private hospitals like this one in northern lebanon. 15-year-old khaled spent three months carrying the wounded out of syria. he was going back and forth every single day from baba amr to lebanon with some of the worst injured. 12 days ago, he was carrying a wounded man on his back when he stepped on a land mine. he lost his leg. "before i was helping the injured," he told us. "now i'm one of them." abu yassir is a 22-year-old student from damascus. he came to lebanon three months ago to help save as many lives as he could.

disney world has been found to contain extremely rare amateur footage of the space shuttle "challenger" exploding. the family was waiting for their flight home when they captured the launch of the airport in 1986. they sensed something was wrong, but had no idea the shuttle was gone until the airline captain made the announcement on the flight home. they discovered this transferring an old vhs tape. it's thought to be one of the two-known amateur videos of that disaster. tonight a florida congressman says he has a better idea for all the loose change passengers leave behind at airport security check points. right now the tsa gets to keep the money, which in 2010 added up to $400,000. florida republican jeff miller says give the spare change to the uso, which supports u.s. troops around the globe, and by the way, receives no tax payer money. they rely entirely on charitable donations. up next, american presidents who know their way around a song.
