Baywide harvest was 219,000 salmon as the season continues to wind down. Cumulative harvest for all of Bristol Bay is 39.2 million fish. Naknek-Kvichak district especially seems to be calming back down from their recent surge. Escapement got a light bump despite the Naknek tower no longer reporting. 213,203 fish made it up the rivers, over half of which went to the Alagnak River. Across Bristol Bay’s nine counted rivers, the total escapement is 24.9 million fish. Nushagak District Yesterday’s harvest in the Nushagak matched the Wednesday’s numbers at 23,000 fish. Average sockeye per drift delivery were at 252 and the season total harvest is now 17.57 million fish. ....
Ugashik fisherman thankful for the harvest Fleets in the Ugashik District have stayed busy over the past week. Fishermen harvested over 600,000 fish a day for three days in a row. Jeremy Rubingh returned for his seventh season on the F/V Eva. He says like every year, he’s grateful for the opportunity to fish in the Ugashik. “Ugashik has been great, it’s been a strong steady run, and just big beautiful fish, and every single year it’s an honor to be a part of in such an amazing thing,” he said. “You get reminded of the volume of fish and how special this is in the world” ....
The Naknek-Kvichak’s run is returning strong and steady. Harmony Wayner, who set nets on Naknek Point, said the weather hasn’t worked in their favor yet. “We re waiting for the wind to switch, the west wind brings fish into Naknek set net sites,” she said. “The east wind isn’t too good for our site at Naknek Point, hopefully it warms up and we get fish and meet our goal.” Wayner noted that over the past few summers, warmer waters have made the fish slower and more sluggish. But with colder temps this season, that hasn’t been the case. ....
Authorities today identified the deceased as Lance Eric Norby, 45, of Arlington, Texas. He captained the F/V Pneuma. Norby s next of kin has been notified. Alaska State Troopers report receiving a call around 5 a.m. Thursday morning that a commercial vessel was taking on water. Two wildlife troopers responded immediately. Before they got there, they heard reports that the three people on board were in the water. The two other people on board survived. Authorities credit Good Samaritans on the scene with helping in the rescue. The Nushagak District broke its single-day harvest record two days in a row On June 30, the fleet harvested 1.7 million sockeye. It has already broken that record with a total catch of 1.8 million on July 1. ....
The Nushagak’s total run is now over 1 million more than 60% of the bay’s total run so far. The river’s king run has picked up a bit, but it’s still far ....
