New Delhi, Jan 22 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Monday adjourned to February 27 the hearing on the bail plea moved by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal, arrested in connection with a cattle-smuggling case.
A man, who was arrested by the police after an encounter on suspicion of cattle smuggling, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital in Varanasi, officials on Monday said.
The TMC leader was arrested by the CBI in August 2022 and by the Enforcement Directorate in November 2022 for allegedly smuggling cattle across the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED), in its chargesheet, has alleged that the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel were involved in cattle smuggling across Indo-Bangladesh border.
According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Anubrata Mondal's bodyguard, Sehegal Hossain, used to accept money from smugglers in exchange for protection in providing security for the smooth movement of cattle towards the Indo-Bangladesh border.
The Delhi Court today extended the judicial custody of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Anubrata Mondal till May 4 in connection with the cattle smuggling case.
Sukanya Mondal was arrested by the ED on April 26. Her father is a TMC leader and is in custody in this matter.
Special judge Raghubeer Singh granted three days of custody after hearing the submission of the Special public prosecutor (SPP) Nitesh Rana and defence counsels.
