Security researchers say they have uncovered nine vulnerabilities in four TCP/IP stacks that could be used to target a range of servers, medical and industrial devices.
The two companies said they intend to present their findings at Black Hat Asia 2021, which is early next month.
The vulnerabilities were found in the FreeBSD, Nucleus NET, IPnet and NetX TCP/IP stacks, and “relate to domain name system (DNS) implementations, causing either denial of service (DoS) or remote code execution (RCE), allowing attackers to take target devices offline or to take control over them,” Forescout Research said in a blog post. ....

Millions of Devices Potentially Vulnerable to DNS Flaws

Forescout Research Labs and the Israeli security firm JSOF have found nine Domain Name System vulnerabilities affecting four TCP/IP stacks that, if exploited, could lead to remote code execution or denial-of-service attacks - potentially on millions of devices.
The group of vulnerabilities, dubbed Name:Wreck, affects the FreeBSD, IPNet, NetX and Nucleus NET stacks. The widespread use of these stacks, together with external exposure of the vulnerable DNS clients, could dramatically increase the attack surface for organizations, JSOF says.
Organizations in the healthcare and government sectors are in the top three most affected for all three stacks, Forescout says. If we conservatively assume that 1% of the more than 10 billion deployments … are vulnerable, we can estimate that at least 100 million devices [could potentially be] impacted by Name:Wreck. ....

Microsoft has published a root cause analysis of an outage of its Azure Domain Name System that struck the cloud platform over Easter, causing intermittent failures for customers accessing and managing their Microsoft services globally.
The problems started at around 8.30 am on April 2, when the Azure DNS servers received an anomalous surge in queries for an unspecified set of domains hosted on Microsoft s cloud.
Microsoft said it was ready for such surges, with layers of caches and traffic shaping to mitigate the effect, but a bug in its DNS service made the overloading worse. ....
