SANTOS, Brazil — Brazilians bid a final farewell this week to soccer giant Pele, starting Monday with a 24-hour public wake at the stadium of his long-time team, Santos.
Santos FC said some 250,000 people had attended his 24-hour wake in the Vila Belmiro stadium, where mourners continued arriving straight through the night.
Pele's coffin was then gingerly lowered onto the shoulders of National Guard soldiers who carried him into the Santos Memorial Cemetery which stands a whopping 14 stories high
