Appeal of East Ferris subdivision dismissed

An Ontario tribunal has dismissed an appeal of a proposed subdivision previously approved by East Ferris.
The Local Planning Appeal Tribunal issued a decision April 23 approving a motion by the municipality to dismiss an appeal by Maggie Preston-Coles without a hearing.

The appeal is related to an approved draft plan of subdivision for residential lots in the area of Centennial Crescent, MacPherson Drive and One Mile Road.
The tribunal’s decision states the concerns expressed as part of the appeal “remained vague and general in scope and were not tethered to the proposed development.” ....

Work begins on 16th Street, project more expensive than expected


The city had budgeted $1.86 million for the project. Brockman Enterprises bid was the lowest one.
Peter Bergquist, the city’s public works director, told council that the costs of pipe and roadworks has gone up, resulting in the increased costs. He said he had the consulting engineer for the project look at similar projects and they found the prices were in line with what they were experiencing.
 “I’m very pleased that it’s a local tender that’s coming across,” said Michael Behiel, Humboldt’s mayor. “I’d like to see us remaining local whenever possible.”
In a letter to residents, the city said on the week of May 11, temporary water lines will be set up for the residents along 16th Street from 8th Avenue to the southern entrance of Jubilee Drive. For the week of May 17, that section of 16th Street will be closed to traffic. ....

The city’s largest project in 2010 will see $1.6 million spent replacing water lines and repaving sections of 16th Street.
“This is a large project for our department,” said Peter Bergquist, Humboldt’s public works and utilities director. “The difference from previous years to this year is we realize that with this particular road and how busy it is. We want to replace the water main, the base and the road structure in the same year.”
Water mains will be replaced and upsized from south of Highway 5 to 11th Avenue. Directional drilling will occur under Highway 5 to connect the water mains and create a looped system to the south side. This is expected to cost $714,700. ....

Unknown holiday humbugs wreck lights, displays


“They took some of my decorations and knocked some lights off my house. I had a big ‘Merry Christmas’ banner on my garage door, my candy canes. they were found in the neighbour’s yard. The decorations of the Christmas tree and I had some light up presents in front of the tree, they took those as well. We had some plastic stars and candy canes on the siding that they took.”
Other residents in the area reported having decorations stolen, including projectors, floodlights, wreaths and similar seasonal items. At least five homes in the Prince Charles Place and Centennial Crescent area had items either stolen or destroyed overnight Dec. 6. ....
