GREGORY N. EARLES, 72, of Logan, W.Va., passed away at home on March 31, 2021, after a long battle with several illnesses. He was born August 2, 1948, and lived most of his life in McConnell, W.Va. He honorably served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1967 until 1971, where he was an airplane mechanic and is a veteran of the Vietnam War. After his time in Vietnam, he was stationed at Mountain Home AFB in Idaho before he left active duty. He earned an associate’s degree from Marshall University. LOGAN — The Logan County Commission presented a proclamation honoring outgoing commissioner Willie Akers during his final regular session Thursday, Dec. 17. A graduate of the former Mullens High School in Wyoming County, Akers came to Logan County around 1961 after playing for the West Virginia University men’s basketball team from 1957 through 1960. He played alongside basketball legend Jerry West, advancing the team to a No. 1 ranking in the 1958 season.
