Important issues on the table, but stressing the fact that you have to have some shared sacrifice here. you can t take the position that we re going to whack the medicare program at the same time we re giving tax cuts to the wealthiest in the country. that just doesn t compute if you re serious about reducing deficits. congressman van holland, thank you very much. thank you. up next, congressman luis gutierrez, not happy with the president s leadership on immigration. and p.j. crowley, is it time to rethink america s mission in afghanistan? this is andrea mitchell reports only on msnbc. hey, did you ever finish last month s invoices? sadly, no. oh. but i did pick up your dry cleaning and had your shoes shined. well, i made you a reservation at the sushi place around the corner. well, in that case, i better get back to these invoices. ....

Talks, congressman. joe biden said on these negotiations he felt there had been some progress. do you see it the same way? well, yes, the talks have been positive. we have been focused on those areas where we can find common ground. obviously things get much more difficult as you get into the more controversial issues. i just heard that clip you played from eric cantor. look, the position the republicans have on how to reduce the deficit is pretty clear. they did that in their house republican budget. they ended the medicare guarantee and said seniors, you got to eat the rising costs and the private insurance market, even as they provided tax breaks to the wealthiest americans and said we have to keep the big subsidies, the oil companies. the president and the democrats% have said, wait a minute, if you re serious about reducing the deficit, then we have got to take a balanced approach. and that is going to be the course of the conversation going ....

Forward. at the same time, their view is that that s not a balanced approach because if you if you raise taxes, you slow the economy and you also give congress more to appropriate. so they don t see that as real deficit reduction. it seems to me that the philosophical divide is so far how does the president or vice president bring it together? that s the purpose of the talks is to try and bridge those two things. but i think it is really hard to argue that their position is not one sided. after all, they did $4 trillion, totally in cuts including deep cuts in medicare, deep cuts in medicaid, programs that help seniors in nursing homes and kids education. that was their approach. that was a one-sided approach. what we said in the big picture is you ve got to go back to the same rates for the very wealthiest americans, same tax rates that were in place during the clinton administration, but at the very least for the purposes of this conversation, for goodness sakes, let s get rid o ....

It is going to look more stalematish for a while before the rubber hits the road, say, in late june and july when you might start seeing some progress. at the same time, i went to a briefing at bloomberg this morning with chuck schumer. and schumer, who is a key player, as you know, says that the debt ceiling deadline really is sooner than august. he says that the markets are going to get very antsy if there isn t real progress. he thinks that there is some middle ground between the no tax pledge and the medicare refusal, some changes in medicare, but he doesn t want to see the overhaul, the paul ryan overhaul. at the same time, he thinks speaker boehner has to give, the house republicans will have to give on the tax side. reporter: it is interesting you bring up timing. i ve been hearing the same thing. democrats are pushing this idea that it needs to be dealt with sooner. republicans are saying no, no, no, we could wait a little bit. that s one disagreement there. aรง little bit ....
