A former navy captain arrested in Taiwan for illegal entry was acting of his own accord and would be punished if returned to China, Beijing said Wednesday, after Taipei raised spying suspicions.

A Chinese mainland spokesman slammed the Taiwan authorities led by Lai Ching-te on Wednesday for an attempt to internationalize the Taiwan question by trying to discuss issues concerning a cross-Strait economic agreement through the World Trade Organization.

China said it would remove preferential tariffs on more than a hundred imports from Taiwan. The new tariffs will come into effect on June 15.

China will reinstate tariffs on 134 items it imports from Taiwan next month, citing Taiwan's failure to reciprocate concessions under the 2010 Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement. The move comes after Taiwan implemented discriminatory measures restricting mainland products, violating the ECFA. Taiwan calls for constructive dialogue without political prerequisites.
