The U.S. Department of Justice announced the arrests of individuals accused of establishing an illegal Chinese police station in New York.
The two helped set up a covert police station in lower Manhattan for China's Ministry of Public Security.
In addition to the two arrests, U.S. authorities charged about three dozen officers with China's national police force with using social media to harass dissidents inside the United States.
Two cases are part of a series of Justice Department prosecutions aimed at disrupting Chinese government efforts to suppress the speech of America pro-democracy activists and others who are openly critical of Beijing's policies.
"We cannot and will not tolerate the Chinese government's persecution of pro-democracy activists who have sought refuge in this country," Breon Peace, the top federal prosecutor in Brooklyn, told reporters. Additionally, prosecutors on Monday unveiled charges against 34 Chinese officials for allegedly operating a "troll farm" and harassing dissidents online, including by disrupting their meetings on U.S. technology platforms.
