Kane County Board members voted against giving themselves raises, but they did vote to keep the health insurance benefits they receive despite being part-time employees. In a related move, the sheriff, clerk and treasurer will all receive raises and a cost-of-living pay increase each of the next four fiscal years.

Neither a gas tax increase nor a property tax hike could muster enough support to be included in the final version of Kane County budget. The board voted to balance its budget with $16 million in federal COVID-19 relief funds and delay solving the deficit that will still exist once all the federal money is gone until after next year's election.

Kane County's ability to help outside agencies with Grand Victoria Riverboat gambling proceeds fell to a new low Wednesday as county board members unveiled $560,000 in riverboat grant funds. That's a big drop from the more than $1 million in grants the county was handing out six years ago.
