Six Indiana high school girls basketball coaches have been chosen as 2021 Bob King Coaches of the Year by their peers in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, it was announced Tuesday.Â
Mark Redding of Carroll (Fort Wayne), Chris Seibert of Crown Point, Donna Buckley of Noblesville, Debbie Smiley of Brownsburg, Jared Rehmel of Linton-Stockton and Scott Schoen of Silver Creek have been selected as honorees for the 2020-21 season through voting that occurred from late January through early March, IBCA executive director Steve Witty said.Â
Honors are awarded according to IHSAA district boundaries, and two coaches from each district are recipients â Redding and Seibert in District 1; Buckley and Smiley in District 2; and Rehmel and Schoen in District 3.Â
VALPARAISOÂ â Breece Walls is a different player.
Last season, Valparaiso s starting point guard averaged 4.0 points per game, but this year the junior has taken on more of a scoring role for the Vikings. I think it s all about patience for me. That s been the key, Walls said. I m not trying not to force anything and just taking the opportunity when the opportunity comes.
Walls scored 16 points in a Class 4A Chesterton Sectional semifinal victory over Crown Point on March 5 and one day later he followed it up with another 16-point outing in the championship against Portage.
His steady offensive outputs helped Valparaiso clinch its 54th sectional title and back-to-back sectional crowns for the first time in 14 years.
According to the IHSAA s website, Mantis career high is the highest scoring output of any boys basketball player in the state this season. That zone is something that you can t really describe. You re blocking out everything and you re just focused on one thing: winning, Mantis said. When the ball was in my hands, I felt like no one could guard me. Every time I shot it, it felt like it was going in.
The 6-foot-7 guard shot 19 of 30 from the field, 8 of 11 on 3-pointers and 7 of 7 at the free-throw line to surpass Lowell s previous single-game scoring record of 50 points by 2011 grad Austin Richie.
