On Jan. 23, a Tacoma police officer driving his patrol vehicle charged through a group of people and ran a person over. The incident is being treated as yet another instance of police “use of force.” Correspondingly, the Tacoma City Council has held special meetings; interim Police Chief Mike Ake has released official statements; and the local police union has defended the officer’s action. Investigations are in motion, and the inevitable appeals to allow “due process” to unfold have been made.

The Tacoma police union condemned the city s response, saying they did not give the officer involved in the weekend incident a fair investigation.
TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Police Union has some harsh words for city leaders who are questioning police actions following a police cruiser incident Saturday night that injured at least two people. Due process means nothing to city leaders, the union said in a news release.
The Tacoma community has been divided in the days after a police officer responding to a report of a street race plowed his car through a crowd of pedestrians that had gathered around him and were pounding on the car’s windows.

TACOMA - A growing outcry from Tacoma city leaders continued into Monday, after an incident involving a Tacoma Police Officer running over a bystander during a reported illegal street race on Saurday night.
On Monday, Tacoma Police released the name of the officer involved in the incident as Officer Khanh Phan, a 58-year-old man who has been a member of the Tacoma Police Department for more than 29 years.
