Volunteers scrub neglected graves of Ionia's founding Dexter family
On Saturday morning, about 20 adult Rotary and teen Interact Club volunteers scrubbed clean the graves of the Dexter family, whose patriarch founded Ionia in 1833. Samuel Dexter first visited the Grand River valley in the summer of 1832, when he observed a small Ottawa camp under Chief Cobmoosa along the river near where Mill Street currently is. A nearby village under Chief Cocoosh numbered approximately 800 residents.
