Beijing | China’s internet giant Tencent and rising challenger ByteDance, creator of TikTok, are fighting an all-out war with escalating turf battles and legal tussles even as the country’s regulators toughen scrutiny of big tech’s market power.
The pair are clashing across multiple arenas as they fight for traffic. Tencent, the gaming and social media behemoth, has amassed more than 1 billion users on its popular messaging app WeChat, which connects with a wide range of services offered by Tencent and partners. Chinese short video platforms are banking on the fast-growing mini drama series segment as tech-savvy youth spend more time watching online short videos during the COVID-19 pandemic and exhibit heightened demand for high-quality original content, industry experts said.
They said competition among major video-streaming websites will focus on improving the production quality of content and better monetizing long-term content operations.
Short video app Tencent Weishi announced it will invest 1 billion yuan ($150 million) to support the development of new mini drama series this year, with each episode lasting from one to three minutes. ....

Chinese smartphone makers are teaming up with professional camera and optical component makers to better meet growing demand of consumers for superior photo-taking and video-shooting capabilities in the 5G era.
Vivo launched its X60 series of smartphones on Tuesday, featuring a quad-camera setup with optics from Zeiss, a German manufacturer of optical systems and optical electronics. The move came shortly after Vivo announced a long-term partnership with Zeiss, to jointly promote and develop breakthrough innovations in mobile imaging technology. Under the deal, Vivo and Zeiss will establish the Vivo Zeiss Imaging Lab, a joint research and development program to innovate mobile imaging technology for Vivo s flagship smartphones. ....
