Hundreds celebrate Christmas with community at City Mission lunch

Hundreds of people gathered at four Auckland locations for a Christmas lunch sponsored by City Mission today.

City Missioner Chris Farrelly said they decided not to do one big lunch - which last year was attended by 2000 people - out of Covid-19 concerns.
Eight hundred people were expected this year at Freemans Bay Community Centre, Nando's on Queen Street and Manukau, and the mission building, according to Farrelly.
"We have smaller lunches, quite intimate, quite connecting, and I think in this is a lot of beauty. Also, we've also provided 9000 families over the last week with a full Christmas lunch so that they can do that at home - chicken, vegetables and desserts etc," he said.

Feeding the hungry is more of a mission than ever in 2020

Christchurch City Mission has been inundated by people the week before Christmas, causing traffic issues.
EDITORIAL: If you’re looking for a symbol of how much more stressful Christmas is for some families in 2020 than in previous years, look no further than the current traffic jams in Christchurch.
Busy traffic and queues near the Christchurch City Mission's Hereford St headquarters forced the city council to make the street one-way until Christmas Eve. Traffic chaos was caused by high demand for the mission’s emergency food parcels.

Chris Farrelly says with only a couple of days to go donations are still pouring in.
As well as its central city headquarters, it is distributing through Manurewa, Papakura and Ngā Whare Waatea Marae.
"So if I could shine a light on what manaakitanga really is and how it has been shown forth this year we would all better off so big hats off to the marae communities, hundreds and hundreds of volunteers, we provide the food and a little bit of help but they do the mahi upfront so mihi to them," Mr Farrelly says.

The Auckland City Mission says demand is soaring for food and presents as desperate families worry about being able to celebrate Christmas after a tough year.
Requests for food parcels had been twice as high as usual throughout the year because of the Covid-19 pandemic and had remained steady in the lead-up to Christmas.
The charity has been distributing around 1000 parcels a week, up from 450 the previous year, and had given out 9000 food parcels in the week leading up to Christmas.

Press Release – Auckland City Mission
In light of COVID-19, this year the Auckland City Mission will hold several smaller Christmas events across different sites, rather than their traditional one large event.
The Mission will instead be holding five lunches around the city, sponsored by ASB and with two of the events supported by Nando’s at their restaurants. With the generosity of ASB, who are also sponsoring Wellington and Christchurch City Mission Christmas activities, the Mission will turn a central city venue and the Mission’s own site into Christmas wonderlands for guests to enjoy. Meanwhile Nando’s will offer guests special Christmas Day menus, complete with gifts and crackers, at two Auckland restaurants.

The Auckland City Mission is preparing to provide thousands of Kiwis with food and necessities this Christmas but COVID-19 has changed things slightly.
CEO Chris Farrelly told Magic Talk's Mitch McCann instead of having a big lunch like they normally do, they will have five smaller ones to keep everyone safe.
"[With] the Christmas lunch... We looked at it very carefully this year and thought we can't bring 2000 people into the cloud given the COVID environment and yet we wanted to have lunch.
"We are thinking of the wellbeing of the vulnerable people who would be coming so we are having five smaller versions on different sites so it's more contained. It is sad to see the big lunch go but hopefully, it will be back next year."

Christmas can't come early enough — at least for some this year. The desire for joy and laughter, regathering with family and friends, not to mention putting 2020 behind us.
For others, there is fatigue from the emotional cost of a year that will be remembered in the history books.
Christmas is a season that evokes mixed emotions for many whānau in Aotearoa. For some, it's a season where families eat together and wait with anticipation to open gifts under a Christmas tree. It can also be another reminder of the passing of a loved one, the pressure of unemployment, the uncertainties of business, loneliness, and a closed border keeping family and friends in far-away lands.

Auckland City Mission is gearing up to hand out tens of thousands of presents and food parcels to whānau in need in the lead-up to Christmas.
Instead of the usual lines outside the mission's CBD headquarters, boxes of Christmas goodies are being handed out from distribution centres across the city.
City Missioner Chris Farrelly said the change was about giving people their dignity.
"Think back five years ago, queues on Hobson Street where we provided the same kind of service every year, but people would come out at midnight, wait in the glare of the public gaze with children and old people, to get a present and run," he said.
