The Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. has submitted its first annual environmental monitoring report to federal regulators, which the company says demonstrates no adverse impact on the marine environment of Cobscook Bay.The company's pilot project near Eastport is the nation's first grid-connected tidal power generation project. Company and political officials cited the environmental monitoring report as a national milestone for the new energy technology.

Tidal systems and tidal power operations, will be tested off Eastport, Maine through commercially viable turbine generator units.

For more than a decade, the Ocean Renewable Power Co. has had its sights set on harnessing energy from Eastport's formidable tides, which average about 18 feet and can go as high as 26 feet. But the company still has no tidal turbines producing power, and doesn't expect to for at least two years.

Bulk of the project will consist of the construction of an indoor lumber yards, designed for the comfort of customers.
