MARIANNA State prosecutors could wrap their case today well ahead of schedule in the trial of former deputy Zachary Wester on charges that he planted drugs on unsuspecting motorists during traffic stops.
On the fourth day of trial, the state is expected to call Wester’s father, Robert Wester, who spent more than two decades at the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office. His son worked as a patrol deputy for the department from May 2016 until his termination amid drug-planting allegations in September 2018.
The elder Wester claimed in a pretrial deposition that his son was framed by prosecutors for the 14 Judicial Circuit in Marianna. Prosecutors for the neighboring 1st Judicial Circuit took over the Wester case. ....

Jury selection beginning in trial of accused drug planting deputy Zach Wester

Jury selection will be anything but typical when it begins Wednesday in the long-awaited trial of a North Florida deputy accused of planting meth on drivers and hauling them away on trumped-up charges.
Zachary Wester, 28, a former deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, is facing six dozen charges ranging from racketeering and official misconduct to fabricating evidence and false imprisonment. The trial starts Monday and is expected to last three weeks.
Lawyers for the prosecution and defense will pick a jury not at the usual spot the Jackson County Courthouse in downtown Marianna but rather the Agriculture Center, a venue with enough space to accommodate an influx of prospective, socially distanced jurors. ....
