Date set for Lubbock s special election on proposed anti-abortion ordinance
The Lubbock City Council officially set the date of May 1, 2021 for a special election, allowing for a public vote on the sanctuary city for the unborn ordinance aimed at outlawing abortions inside city limits.
Tuesday s vote from the city council was mandated by the city charter. The vote to call the special election was part of the city council s consent agenda, so no discussion took place beforehand.
The city estimates it ll cost more between $160,000 and $200,000 to have the city-wide election the cost will depend on what other public entities, such as area school districts, will also have items on the ballot. The City of Lubbock does not have any other votes scheduled next year.
