We've been talking this morning about stress we've talked to people who have suffered from from stress and the key thing that's coming out from all the conversations that we've had so far is 1st of all from an individual point of view knowing and realizing that you've got a problem yourself the sum that you've got an issue but also that it's recognised and backed up by the people that you're working with and for. Yes I mean I think I went particularly with general practice and we know that the g.p. Working days becoming so intense the workload is so hard that G.P.'s that started to look after themselves by cutting down the number of days that they were it is ironic isn't it that the people that we go to Ditto about. All manner of things obviously but in this instance stress and work related stress anxiety depression what have you that they are then they're suffering the same thing as a result of all of us coming to see them. Yeah I mean it's a complicated issue we know that we need more g. Pays there aren't enough of them for the work that's there at the moment even though we're training more G.P.'s than ever before we're not managing to keep hold of the ones we've got particularly well mostly because the work is intense we also need to recruit more people to work in general practice not just G.P.'s but people like mental health practitioners pharmacists physiotherapist lots of other people around in the primary care team who can help support people less in the what life would G.P.'s but also provide a bed to service to people in their communities. It seems a bit of a worry really that the people that we rely on to look after us you know are going through all of these who looks after the people that look after us when they need looking after Says been some investment in mental health services for general practitioners over the last couple of years new helplines and various other bits to help look after G.P.'s and I think the trend towards G.P.'s recognising that they need to balance their work carefully is an important one we know that so when we talk about G.P.'s what working part time we don't talk about hours g.p. Days are measured in sessions they what 2 sessions would be a day but those sessions are often 6 hour was robbed of them for that they don't work by the hour so whatever time wave what 312 hour days in the week that tired and burnt out and asking then went then to work 5 seems not very healthy either for them or for that patient so the only way to address that is to get more of them and more of the stuff so that we can provide good care to patients but also support the mental health and the physical health as well of the G.P.'s that we have do you think we've got that new trainees are looking towards that kind of work and to thinking about their own health too silly to have interrupted that do you think. That we have a response of the public has a responsibility as well. You know we all want to see a doctor and we all want to see a doctor immediately because. Whatever is wrong with us is obviously the biggest thing on the planet at that particular time and perhaps if you know we were a bit more sensible in taking up G.P.'s and surgeries times perhaps using the telephone a bit more than sitting in a waiting room for for a couple of hours and taking up 10 precious minutes where that g.p. Could be seeing somebody else and then the whole system's kind of un clogs itself a little bit it's a really complicated because what g.p. To really good at is knowing things we don't know it's very hard for patients quite often to with something serious or not however there are lots of things that we can do to look after our house better to take care of ourselves to use pharmacy them pharmacists who are amazing experts in the community can really help us with lots of different my new elements to think about being Ok if it's do you know what the best person to see today isn't the g.p. It's the nurse practitioner or they physiotherapist because actually they'll probably the person who can help people today with your knee pain a whatever it is so to think about the resources we've got the authors know that G.P.'s are there when we need them thinking carefully and helping the people at sizzles they need to help people understand what other options around that some have a look at the slightly wider issue of stress and you know in a couple of conversations on the program this morning I've kind of said that you know 20 years ago say for instance you didn't hear about it so much and obviously then you didn't recognise perhaps that you were suffering from stress because it wasn't talked about the resources weren't there the Internet and things like that to research you know how you were feeling is because I know you work with with young minds don't you and is this something that the is growing and is it getting worse or is it just that we we know more about it and we talk about it more that it seems to be around a lot more. If that makes sense yes so I worked with young ones for about 9 years as a trustee I just I just retired as it were but they I think they would do research things that me and children we are seeing more anxiety depression and stress I think it's a combination of more prevalence but also that we know more about it so people are more able to self report we live in. Pressures of work people needing needing to work we know that lots of other things impact on stress people what living environments poverty poor housing all those things can really contribute to stress also people living with long term health conditions which we know now more prevalent that living for longer with these complex chronic conditions and they go hand in hand with things like I saw it in depression it's very very common to have mental health problems as well alongside your long term physical health problems like diabetes or heart disease so all of that I think is a bit of the perfect storm but means we do need more investment in those kinds of services in Primary Care to support people and do you think the converse and finally Becky because the news is almost upon us but convincing the older generation that perhaps wouldn't have opened up and talked about things like this 203040 years ago you know they are now talking about it and and more aware of mental health and well being than perhaps they would have been before well I think mental health is so important for Africa well being it's great that people are opening up and talking about it more because to live well in your life you need to take care of both your mental and your physical health and I think it's great that we're doing those things but it will only mean that we need to pay attention to how we support people to do that back to good to talk to you thanks so much for sparing the time thank you bad senior fellow at working in policy for the king's Fondo 8756 double one double one the number to call here at b.b.c. So it was picked up by the air ambulance back in 2010 having sustained some very serious injuries that you can never say still we're very literally saved my life but there's good odds that they did so only they meant that I got some incredibly good health care very early on the time I was completely unaware that the air ambulance our territory they are not funded by the Government funded by. Councils that's it's all for regular giving and crazy events like this and. I wanted to give something back and I have a very long time but I've always been going through stages of recovery and trying to find the right thing in the right time never happened and it feels good Tell us what the other will talk about every. On a rope. Not not pope on a rope but you know Everest in a rope here remind us what some of the other challenges that you've done as well so I did a 5 k. Open water swim having never done an open water swim for a triathlon a couple of obstacle races I did the time I was half marathon back in February that was the 1st one. I voted America. Which was a really great event it was at the course in $76.00 and they had a real community atmosphere to it we had about 3 or 4 people doing it so alive and then we had a few teams and there's a real as well horrific day if I'm honest but you incredible at the same time you know community fear and the way everyone pulled together. Us So I remember to look after so many things so many where is mine my challenge this would be turn the page of the book Paul another glass of wine walk to the kitchen to get the bottle of wine very very important to. Say I think so let's talk about Everest so what was the idea when and where did the inspiration for it come from so the inspiration came around this time last year me and a couple of friends and their families we met for Christmas the Lunts and it was Craig and Alex who joined me for a barrier challenge is over the course of the year and we'd just done a tough mudder and we kind of wanted to push for of a thing maybe do another tough mudder maybe do other things we were looking at the half marathon in February. And myself and Craig had recently read what I had to leave book or said Please we're going to swarm around Britain we're in the last year like he's from a school without getting land and a few years ago this guy you know he's an animal but he climbed Everest on a very single handedly in under 24 hours before and I guess that's never going to happen but maybe as a team we could do something similar and I'm going to be honest it was Craig's idea he denies it. Is very much his idea and it's stuck and so I start looking at the logistics of it looking at how we could make it work and it seemed like a fitting end yeah 12 towns as we'd had no way of comprehending how hard it would be but we knew it was going to be harder than anything. So you did it over the weekend. Well how long did it take you for a start we clocked in at 24 hours and something like 26 minutes and was that just continual climbing and you doing it in a relay or you all doing at the same time. We had one ropes up so mixing it up a little bit there were points where you were doing it in a very very one person have a go then another then another most of the times we were doing biggest since then that so we were doing. So at 510 minutes on a rest and have a rest it made it a bit more to evil when we got to in the morning and Kira on maps corner where he was carrying that to realize that the math was wrong and we were looking like we were going to be about $300.00 sort of the you had. We had. Someone climbing this rope if we firstly seconds and it was just. It was of work by the states Alex had been taken ill and he'd been able the whole week before the amazing you turned up to do some of it to be honest he could only handle so much and I'm going to Dario you couldn't reinforcement. And you know how how how long was the rope that you were climbing. You know obviously not ever is right day but so what was that coming requirement and we rig the white we had some incredible volunteers who came in Victor up the systems for us we rig the right form the. The apex of the sailing which we measured to be about 7 and a half meters. We had a safety line because you know I've had experience with big boats in the off and so we had to say if you were rigged up as well as we were climbing we were discovering that through that last 2 and a half to 2 metres it was just getting so tangled in the work for getting so twisted never that it was actually like proportionately really hard to make a yeah and we'd already marked this 5 metre mark in case like the fatigue was getting us we thought we'd just be sore since the Masters you know 5 yeah we thought it was as it turns out you know what yeah. It was a little easier. After I don't know 8 or 9 hours so I did actually you know it's better if we just worked it out 5 metre mark keep that consistent and we can maintain a better pace there was a lot it was a surprising amount of tactics came in to try and work out you know for you to keep people a little bit for us yeah you know when people who are out here it's a low so it's a long time Yeah absolutely and you know you are you getting tired anyway for not sleeping but the physical activity on top of that is just. Pulling the whole body movement yesterday and how you feeling now what we now Wednesday are sort with 3 days since. Yeah I'm a lot of my body has held up fairly well the thing that's still getting me is my hands and my 4 arms from the elbows down to the fingertips. I'm going to hit bed Sunday night you know thought this is going to be incredible I'm so tired I'm so exhausted and then found half an hour later that because I hadn't moved my hands off they just completely insane stuff and I woke up in agony Yeah I think about an hour of this massive thing my fingers a massive thing for the skin to play if I broke. Well I'm quite heavily drugged. It's probably the way to go all medicinal and. Generally how much do you think you've raised in a limb we are currently just getting paid it's currently sitting on I think it's about 7 and a half grand for the year of salary is it I know there's some cash knocking around because we have a couple of collection buckets at the wall and you know there are a few people there of plants cashier and where so I think yes 7 and a half creeping up on 8000 pounds which is amazing and you know it was about 5 before the white climbs that that kind of it was there was a massive search and a lot of that was just because so many people were involved they were coming to the water support we had people turning up at half 1 in the morning just to give us a bit of a cheer and keep us going. You know people who are coming up and volunteer and to do a crime to give a little rest you know it was a real community atmosphere and social media was amazing there were people showing it across various platforms and hours makes a difference as well that's really good and yeah it's nice that you all came together with this one common cause it was a really super tell you what we're talking I've been talking on the program today about stress and anxiety and it's like that and you know what kind of boost because I would imagine obviously at the time of the accident you would be very very low with anything that's going on and you know what does you know the climbing and the challenges that you've been doing and setting yourself what does that kind of given you mentally as well a massive boost I guess yeah definitely. Conversation of a friend of mine who's on the t.v. . A while ago I was having. Yes a very elite sport operating at Paralympic level when these this if it glee working towards a goal and it's kind of contrasting to where I'm at because although I have climbed on the g.b. Team and I really love climbing I've always tried to make sure that I'm as rounded as I can vary and my goal from day one of rehab was to get to a place where I was by hopefully as capable as I was before yeah and in some ways a lot of better and stronger and in some ways a more capable in some ways I'm still not Ok and I'm still trying to level that. Amazing. To be and I hope to do something like this year to reach that level of fitness and ability where I can for myself something go Ok let's go to our full on it was a was a great example I didn't do very well. I didn't do it but you know and the fact was I got to a place where you know in my recovery I've got to play so I could so I'm up for a triathlon about 2 weeks before I was doing it get on a bike once Yeah. It wasn't pretty There's a photo of the dog you know I look worse than I did during the workload but you know that's incredible I think I think to be honest with you everyone's got photos like that you know and I you know I did some running a few years back we did the 5 k. Musician Yeah I think everything so interconnected now like music fashion and co-chaired to be across all of it and to make that open for young women as well as young men and giving opportunities as what we really did it for and I'll does that manifest itself that will see London is the brand it's a platform you want to celebrate and catapult people out there but what does that mean on a day to day basis for you what does your job look like. It's busy and hence a lot of running around emails me and I've been on lots of events Yeah we put on the events and we also did creative direction an art direction for Bryan campaigns an artist so I mean during the day where online emailing chasing a lot of people who are the wrong club of Nike order in the pool cause we go a radio show on N.T.'s as well I mean it sounds like fun it doesn't really sound like work I have to tell you it's fun yeah we do you get to connect to have a lot of amazing people yeah I am really on it and I'm really excited you know like been happy that we've been given this opportunity to basically create a platform and do what we want to do it's interesting because I've been working in the music industry for many years and occasionally all here in America knowledge has to an international it is does coming to London and everyone will say oh who's bringing you to London and I'll go see London. And they having an impact internationally as well you all the people of brands influences come to know about what's cool and fresh in London what do you 2 think is still cool that's always been cool in London I think. It's something that will never always be timeless is being yourself I know got it yeah I'm just being true to yourself and not watching what the people were doing. That will always prevail and is there anything new and upcoming that everyone should be ahead of because obviously the point of the scene is to keep everyone fresh and ahead of the game so what should we know about what's happening in London that the both the London ladies would recommend Well it depends in what sense because I would say what's really exciting is there's lots of female deejays and need the male deejays I mean women is happening I mean it is happening and there's more spaces for females now and I feel like that's really exciting you know yeah yeah and also. There's like loads of different sounds now we have like a lot of finally like more Jamaican and African sounds coming into like the club and the music scene it's always been there but now there's a big I think you know your opinion is well yeah him music a lot of friend to load is being played on our clubs now that we've had Afro one of going back to a bit of Don's hole cause coffees in sound logs What about European sounds what sorts of European sounds do you think Mike so we'll be going for all channel I think Europeans would be doing Trop and like the music that we play really well for years and it's like everyone else to school and to what I'm excited about where excited about is some of the female artist that are coming out of like France a chop out is really really exciting and how did you 2 meet. Angles that we're taking but during the summer you could be doing something about some of festival. Bikini's is not one I've had yet but let's put that out there absolutely. I know obviously I live in an organic farm honeybee farmer so I work a lot with with nature and for what I believe are the sort of the real meaningful things in life now silly well where we've got you in today with the Christmas season upon us a lot of us are starting to think about the great needed family time and of course the gift again and I hear the I'll stop to spend 19000000000 on presents but a lot of us are struggling when it comes to finding the perfect gift so how can you help well so this I think genuinely could be a game changer right now just when we're talking about this but I want to start revolution I think you should be a part of that with me today I am ready for your Listen I will lie or show describe me as a revolution. So so I think it's about not necessarily that's a classic question is Where do I go to solve the problem I whereas actually what this is saying is just stop a 2nd pause have a little think about who you're buying for and the classic things you pick something up just before you put in your basket if we go to the till think all they going to use it can I see them using and what are they likely to say when I hand this over so it just me. Mean my friends they went Oedipal my producers just read a book and know that one edible is just weird you know when you look at something you go is this a joke if Yeah why have you given me this and then you look around in the bag and I was there another gift that you know there's nothing else that she really thought I would want what does that mean so well hang on I have a better question for me a more important question I just need to go outside for what happened to the plastic G.'s strings me and my friend needs when her mom put them on our heads and we took City Christmas pictures with Ok that's it now they come up on Facebook every year and remind us and I hope that the goal that gave them to us doesn't see anyone carrying on what's the number we don't want but the number thing I think. And so if I go to a nice store and get some poll shower gel you know bubble bath I think well you can find a problem with that because everyone likes to smell fresh Yeah that's true you can't go wrong with that can you wow you know it's a bit personal isn't it as a bit like saying everybody most people wed some sort of jewelry and I like that jewelry so all that for them and I've had some pretty horrific jewelry book for have to say when smell is quite a personal man in the past will think that you can keep it kind of like a like a baby even in the east Mel it can really just not something to it would be like Fred moral or it wouldn't be to in frankincense to say like a neutral smell Ok like God Now you make me feel like my best go to gift is of Israel at all I'm saying is maybe this Christmas rather than having go to gifts or best gifts we should all think you know what let's push sort of conception and preconception of Christmas gifting a little bit and don't just go for the things that you always do think and get to learn a little bit more about the individual because it's about the experiences and if I gift really well and I give you a gift and it lands and you say our look at our past balder and it's quite light and it jingles when I shake it and I wanted to is that potentially I can smell it and I say yes.
