Young Lawyers Section election season: We want you | Jax Daily Record | Jacksonville Daily Record

Kayla Haines Herrin • JBA Young Lawyers Section
It’s that time of year when the Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section board of governors is looking for our next board members. Elections will begin soon and I want to encourage anyone interested to run for our board and to get involved.
For those on the fence, I will tell you a little about my experience.
I have been involved with this board for three years now; one year as an ex officio member and two years in my elected seat.
Board activity is incredibly rewarding. Over the course of these three years, I have not only met some of my closest friends, but I’ve been involved and led some of our biggest initiatives and gained leadership skills in the process.

Swampscott opposition to new school building coalesces

Residents launch ballot-question committee, hire lawyer
Leigh Blander / Special to The Swampscott Reporter
A group of Swampscott residents has officially launched a Save Our Schools campaign against the town's proposed 900-student elementary school that voters will, at some point, weigh in on.  The ballot-question committee is also hiring a lawyer for its fight.
“We’re for smaller schools for smaller children,” said Gail Brock, who chairs the Save Our Schools ballot committee. “We’re for sharing the traffic and congestion that occurs around the schools and for preserving the wetlands and endangered specials that live in the area.”

Imbalance exists across Swampscott elementary schools, , officials say

Deep discrepancies in the number of economically disadvantaged students across Swampscott’s three elementary schools exist and the state wants the town to take action to fix it, school officials say.
“It is extreme from what they see across the commonwealth,” said Schools Superintendent Pamela Angelakis, “so we have to start doing something about it now. My team and I have been thinking about…is there a way, as we hopefully move toward twin schools and a new school building project, that we start to level that out.”

The drive that made S. Prestley Blake — and the Friendly’s chain he founded with his brother, Curtis, in the depths of the Great Depression — a success didn’t waiver, even in Blake’s final weeks.
“Pres was always in command, right up until the last minute,” his wife of 38 years, Helen, said Friday. “The most dreaded words every morning were ‘I have an idea’.”

NORTHAMPTON — For years, city resident Rodney Kunath has wanted Northampton to close caption its public meetings.
“In the City Council meetings, there should be a screen showing closed captions,” Kunath said on Tuesday as he sat in his living room wearing a Clarke School baseball hat.
Kunath, who is deaf, is a member of the city’s Disability Commission and graduated in 1958 from what was then called the Clarke School for the Deaf. He moved back to the city in 1985.

Daily Hampshire Gazette Editor-In-Chief Laid Off Amid Corporate Consolidation

5:18
On Tuesday, Daily Hampshire Gazette Editor-In-Chief Brooke Hauser announced that she had lost her job. Hauser took the position at the 234 year-old publication – the longest running daily newspaper in Massachusetts – in the summer of 2018. In a statement, publisher Michael Moses of Newspapers of New England said Hauser will be replaced by Joan Livingston of the Greenfield Recorder. NNE continues to lay off employees and sell holdings. Hauser spoke with WAMC about her time at the Gazette as she cleaned out her office in Northampton Tuesday.
HAUSER: It is the community. I mean, not the entire community, because not everybody reads it, not everybody writes for it and engages with it. But, you know, I was Arts and Culture editor before being the editor-in-chief here, and I come from a long history of journalism in all different fields- you know, magazine, books, newspapers. But you know, I live here, I live in this community, and when I open the Gazette, because  I read it every morning, I see my city's mayor and my friends and my neighbors, and what's happening with my kids' school district, and, I mean, it is the community itself reflected back to you. And one thing I've been very proud of, in addition to our reporting and the work of our writers and photographers here, is the work of our columnists on the opinion page and the features sections, people who- We have such talented people who live in the Pioneer Valley, and that they take the time and effort to write for the Gazette, to share their opinions, whether it's about override or what's happening in the schools, or to reflect on the loss of RBG and what that means for feminists, we just have, we have so many great writers. And I've been personally very invested in bringing them into the paper, voices that reflect a wide diversity of our community. More people of color, more women, more people of different gender and sexual identities, young people, even more conservative columnists. I believe in a free press and an exchange of ideas, and it's been wonderful that way.

‘Astad was a genius who could never sit still’: Dadi Pudumjee
Puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee recalls how the inimitable Astad Deboo revolutionised the way the world saw Indian contemporary dance and brought music to the deaf
December 13, 2020 6:30:13 am
When on stage, Astad could create certain emotional states and take the audience with him.
I first met Astad Deboo in 1981 when I was at the Shri Ram Centre for Art and Culture in Delhi, running the Sutradhar Puppet Theatre. He had come with a group of friends who were supporting him in doing up his sets and lighting. After that, we met off and on, when he performed in Delhi or I in Mumbai, where he was based.
