French writer Annie Ernaux, who won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Literature, was born in 1940 in Normandy. Her works include A Woman's Story and A Man's Place.
Erneaux is known for her semi-autobiographical works. The permanent secretary noted her "clinical acuity" in examining personal memory.
Ernaux has received the award for her “the courage and clinical acuity with which she uncovers the roots, estrangements and collective restraints of personal memory.”
Ernaux understands that writing honestly about her parents is a form of betrayal – but she does it anyway.
