A Wauconda and Holiday Hills police officer who was in critical condition following an off-duty crash has been taken out of a coma and is alert and communicating, officials said.
An off-duty Wauconda Police Marine Unit officer and his wife were seriously injured in a fatal three-car crash April 25 near Rockford. Now, family and friends are raising money to help the couple.

Illinois State Police say the three-car crash happened just after 2:30 a.m. on I-39 southbound near mile marker 104.
